Pre-Honors Placement Information - Tolt Middle School

The Pre-Honors Program at Tolt Middle School is designed to support academically talented students in English Language Arts and/or Mathematics. These courses offer challenging curricula with advanced expectations for students. Placements in the Pre-Honors ELA and/or Math courses provide identified students with daily opportunities for cognitive peer interaction in addition to engagement at greater depth and breadth of the academic standards.

Criteria for placement in pre-honors language arts classes:

Grade 6

  • At least the 85th percentile on the Grade 5 Fall MAP or Winter MAP, and
  • Level 4 on the Grade 4 English Language Arts SBA

Grade 7

  • At least the 85th percentile on the Grade 6 Fall MAP or Winter MAP, and
  • Level 4 on the Grade 5 English Language Arts SBA, and
  • At least B- grades in Language Arts 6

OR

  • At least B- grades in Pre-Honors Language Arts 6

Grade 8

  • At least the 85th percentile on the Grade 7 Fall MAP or Winter MAP, and
  • Level 4 on the Grade 6 English Language Arts SBA, and
  • At least B- grades in Language Arts 7

OR

  • At least B- grades in Pre-Honors Language Arts 7

Criteria for placement in 6th grade advanced math classes:

Advanced Math 6

  • At least the 85th percentile on the Grade 5 Fall MAP or Winter MAP, and
  • Level 3 on the Grade 4 Math SBA

Pre-Algebra

  • At least the 95th percentile on the Grade 5 Fall MAP or Winter MAP, and
  • Level 4 on the Grade 4 Math SBA

Students going into 7th and 8th grade will automatically be placed into the next math class unless they would be in Pre-Algebra, Algebra, or Geometry and did not earn at least C- grades in math during the previous school year.

Some students may qualify for a more advanced class based on the below criteria.

Criteria for placement in 7th grade advanced math classes:

Pre-Algebra

  • At least the 75th percentile on the Grade 6 Fall MAP or Winter MAP, and
  • Level 3 on the Grade 5 Math SBA

Algebra

  • At least the 95th percentile on the Grade 6 Fall MAP or Winter MAP, and
  • Level 4 on the Grade 5 Math SBA

Criteria for placement in 8th grade advanced math classes:

Algebra

  • At least the 75th percentile on the Grade 7 Fall MAP or Winter MAP, and
  • Level 3 on the Grade 6 Math SBA

Placement letters will be mailed at the end of March and will include information about our pre-honors appeals process. This spring's Smarter Balanced scores will not be able to be considered as part of the appeals process because these assessments have been cancelled. Students who want to submit an appeal while our school is closed can email it to Claire Wallace, Principal's Secretary, at wallacec@rsd407.org.
