Message from the Principal
We've had a fabulous
start to the school year! It's been great to meet our incoming students
and see our returning students (and how they grew over the summer). Our
WEB (Where Everybody Belongs) program was again a success with our 8th
grade WEB leaders doing a wonderful job helping our 6th graders to
learn how we do things at Tolt.
We've shared with
students about our updated cell phone policy, which we are calling
"Away for the Day." Our staff believes that students will be
more engaged in learning by keeping their cell phones in their
backpacks. We also believe that face-to-face communication is an
important skill to develop and use to build social connections. If you
ever need to communicate with your student while they are at school,
please call our main office and we will deliver a note to them.
We've also started
our PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports)
implementation by introducing The Thunderbird Way, which states how we
are respectful, responsible, and safe. Our staff is acknowledging
students who display The Thunderbird Way by giving them Tolt Tickets,
which can be used to enter raffles or buy things at the Student Store.
We plan on reinforcing and reminding students of The Thunderbird Way
throughout the year.
In an effort to increase
communication with families, we will be launching an Instagram and
Twitter page to share information about what's going on at
Tolt. More information about these pages will be coming soon.
Our staff is looking
forward to meeting parents and guardians at our Curriculum Night on
Thursday, September 12th. You will have the opportunity to hear
directly from your student's teachers about their classes and how you
can support their learning at home. We hope to see you there.
Lastly, you may have
noticed last week when our district calendar was finalized that our
parent-teacher conferences will be in October. In the past, conferences
have been in November. The reason for this shift is so our teachers can
connect with parents about their student's progress earlier in the
year. We will have conferences at Tolt on the evening of Wednesday,
October 9th and all day on Thursday, October 10th. Our students will
not attend school on Thursday, October 10th. More information about our
October conferences will be available next week.
Our staff wants to
do whatever we can so your student is successful this year. Please
reach out if there is ever anything we can do to support them.
Thank you for
sharing your wonderful students with us.

taken during their PE or health class. Students NOT in PE rotation
will have their picture taken during first period on September
10th. Here's the schedule as to when students in each class will
have their school picture taken:

Dam Evacuation Drill
Tolt Dam Evacuation Drill is scheduled for
Wednesday, September 25, 2019
As many of you know,
the Riverview School District participates in a simulation, along with
local agencies, in the event of a dam breach. At approximately
9:40 AM, all 6th grade students at Tolt Middle School will
participate in a dam evacuation drill. Look for more information
to come home with your student.
Please remind your
students to dress warmly and wear sturdy shoes. We are hopeful
the weather will be cooperative; however, if the day brings a downpour
of rain, we will reschedule the drill.

Thank you to each of
you who brought emergency medications and immunization paperwork to
registration and during this first week of school.
K-12 students are required to show proof of receiving 2 varicella
vaccinations or immunity to chickenpox and all incoming 6th grade
students are required to have a Tdap booster. Notification of students
with non-compliant or incomplete records will be mailed out in early
October and by state law, all students must be in full compliance (or
have a signed exemption, cosigned by their health care provider) by the
end of October.

has a significant health condition, talk with Nurse Rachel about the

As the weather is beginning to change, remember that colds
and flu season are right around the corner! Tips for staying healthy:
good handwashing with soap and water every time you use the restroom,
blow your nose, before and after eating, etc.; don't share food; good
rest; healthy food; spend time outside. Please remember that if your
student has a fever of 100, vomiting and/or diarrhea, they may not
attend school until free of these symptoms for 24 hours. If these
symptoms occur while at school they need to go home and be symptom free
for 24 hours before returning to school.
Please feel free to contact me with any questions or
concerns. Let's make this a safe and healthy year!
