A Letter From the Principal

Dear Thunderbird Families,

We've had such a strong start to our year here at Tolt. I continue to hear from individuals who step onto our campus that they can feel positive vibes. Our incoming 6th graders look like they've gotten into the swing of middle school life and are walking around campus with increased confidence. We've had a successful PBIS launch in introducing The Thunderbird Way. Our students have quickly adjusted to our "Away for the Day" cell phone policy. As we move through the year, we will continue to be intentional about creating an environment where students feel connected to school and can focus on learning.

Our high turn-out at Curriculum Night reminded me once again how grateful we are to have such supportive families. I enjoyed connecting with so many of you and hearing about your student's experiences at Tolt. Our teachers valued the opportunity to share how you can partner with them. Please do reach out throughout the year if there is ever anything we can do for your student.

We hope to once again see many parents and guardians at our upcoming conferences. This is an excellent opportunity to talk with teachers about your student's progress early in the year . Our arena-style conferences will be in the MPR from 4:30-7 pm on Wednesday, October 9th and from 8-11 am on Thursday, October 10th. More information about conferences is below.

Thank you for your support of our school and for sharing your incredible students with us.

With Thunderbird Pride,

Amie Karkainen, Principal

Parent/Teacher Conferences

Wednesday, October 9th

  • Arena-Style Conferences from 4:30-7 PM in our MPR: All parents/guardians welcome.
  • There will be a Spanish speaking interpreter available during evening conferences.

Thursday, October 10th

  • No School for Tolt Students
  • Arena-Style Conferences from 8-11 AM in our MPR: All parents/guardians welcome
  • Teacher-Scheduled Conferences from 12-3 PM: By invitation only
    • Parents and guardians will be notified in advance if they are invited to attend a conference with their student's team of teachers.  This afternoon is only for conferences scheduled by our teachers.

All parents and guardians are welcome to attend our arena-style conferences during the evening of Wednesday, October 9th and in the morning of Thursday, October 10th.  Since conferences will end on time, please arrive early enough to have plenty of time to both wait in line and talk with your student's teachers.  Teachers will keep conversations relatively brief so they can talk with all their families.

Making it a priority to attend conferences is a great way to get personalized feedback about how your student is doing at Tolt.  We hope to see you at conferences!

Library Connection

Here's to another great year of reading!

Nightly Reading Tips

Sometimes nightly reading can be a struggle - here are a few things you could try.

  • Strategy to help with time spent reading: Just like playing a sport or an instrument takes practice, so does reading. If your student struggles to spend 20-30 minutes each night reading, know that it takes time to build that stamina. It is okay to start with shorter time periods - but please don't set a timer. Help your student find a comfy spot to settle down and let them read for what they can. Each week encourage them to increase their time.
  • Strategy to help with reading choice: It is okay for your student to read magazines, newspapers, or comic books in addition to their chapter books for their reading time.

Book Fair

The Book Fair runs from Monday, October 7th through Thursday, October 10th.  Please stop by the fair during parent-teacher conferences to catch up on new titles for middle schoolers. This is a library fundraiser and helps us purchase items for your students. If you'd like to volunteer, we'd love to have you! Please contact us at the library or through the PTSA if you are interested in helping. We could use one parent volunteer Monday - Wednesday for an hour and a half during lunches.

Counseling Office

As school counselors at Tolt Middle School, we support students with personal/social concerns, academic challenges and career/college awareness. Starting October 1st we will be presenting to students how to access their counselor if they need to meet. We will be following up with lessons to help foster resiliency and growth mindset.

We encourage you to check with your child to find out what they learned from our classroom presentations and how these skills will help them in middle school and beyond!

Also we will be starting small groups this fall.  Along with meeting with counselors on-on-one, students can take part in groups where students working on similar skills and concerns.  These groups will include:  School Motivation, Family change, Friendship/Social skills, Loss/Grief, and Stress/anxiety.

Email your child's counselor, if you are interested in having him or her participate in one of these groups:

Carrie Diligencia ( ,students with last names A-K

Tim Suchsland ( ,students with last names L-Z.

Nurse's Corner

Thank you to each of you who brought emergency medications and immunization paperwork to registration and during these first weeks of school. If you have not turned in your paperwork yet - please do so As Soon As Possible!!

Immunizations: All K-12 students are required to show proof of receiving 2 varicella vaccinations or immunity to chickenpox and all incoming 6th grade students are required to have a Tdap booster. Notification of students with non-compliant or incomplete records will be mailed out in early October and by state law, all students must be in full compliance (or have a signed exemption, cosigned by their health care provider) by the end of October.

Paperwork: Please turn in an annual health concerns update form (In Spanish) so we have the most up-to-date health information for your student. If your student has a significant health condition, talk with Nurse Rachel about the need to have an Emergency Care Plan or Individual Health Plan on file for your student.

Student Housing Questionnaire

Each school year the Superintendent of Public Instruction asks our district to send out a Student Housing Questionnaire to each family in our district.

Please find the attached printable link to the questionnaire in both English and Spanish.  Please return the completed form to the Main Office at Tolt.

If you have any questions, please contact Mardi Rezoski, Tolt Registrar at 425-844-4607.
