A Letter From the Principal

Dear Thunderbird Families,

We're in full swing here at Tolt with lots of exciting things happening. Our 6th graders look like they are enjoying Thunderbird life, the sports teams showed great sportsmanship at their first home matches, students were very respectful during last week's Dam Evacuation Drill, clubs are kicking off with high numbers of students participating, and our days are filled with lots of learning as our outstanding teachers provide students with engaging activities. We should be so proud of our school.

The month of October is filled with several events to share with you.

  • Thursday, October 4th, we will have an assembly with speaker John "Push" Gaines, who will talk to our students about resiliency.
  • Tuesday, October 9th, is our annual ASB magazine drive kick-off assembly. This drive funds the many activities, clubs and sports we have here at Tolt.
  • Thursday, October 11th, our 6th and 8th grade students will take the Healthy Youth Survey in their science classes.
  • The week of October 15th-19th, is our first Spirit Week of the year with fun dress up days and our annual Student-Staff volleyball game assembly on Thursday, October 18th.

Thank you to all of you who attended our Curriculum Night in September. We had a great turn-out and our staff appreciated the opportunity to connect with so many of you. It's not too late to join the Tolt PTSA and help them reach their goal of 300 members. Your support of our school matters.

We want to do everything we can to help your student to have positive experiences at Tolt. Please feel free to reach out if there is anything we can do to better meet the needs of your student.

Grateful to serve this special school community,

Amie Karkainen, Principal

Counseling Office

As school counselors at Tolt Middle School, we support students with personal/social concerns, academic challenges and career/college awareness. Starting the first week of October we will be presenting to students how to access their counselor if they need to meet. We will be following up with lessons to help foster resiliency and growth mindset.  The purpose of the these lessons will cover the following areas:

1)    Fostering and encouraging resiliency and grit in students;

2)    Learning cognitive/memory strategies;

3)    Handling stress and anxiety;

4)    Building healthy optimism.

We encourage you to check with your child to find out what they learned from our classroom presentations and how these skills will help them in middle school and beyond!

Also, we will be starting small groups this fall.  Along with meeting with counselors on-on-one, students can take part in groups where students working on similar skills and concerns.  These groups will include:

  • School motivation/Organization
  • Family change
  • Friendship/Social skills
  • Loss/Grief
  • Stress/anxiety

Email your child's counselor, if you are interested in having him or her participate in one of these groups:

Carrie Diligencia (

students with last names A-K

Tim Suchsland (

students with last names L-Z.

Library Connections

Here's to another great year of reading! Please encourage your students to read at least 20 minutes each day.

Teen Read Week is October 7-13

This year's theme is "It's Written in the Stars: READ" - science fiction and fantasy are the focus, as well as great non-fiction choices featuring space.

Digital Citizenship Week is October 15-19

What does it mean to be a good digital citizen? As students spend more time using computers in their academic and social lives, they should know basic expectations of how to interact with others online and how to manage their time. CommonSense Media is a great resource for parents, featuring articles on all sorts of tech topics:

Library Books

Students may check out up to six books at a time for a two week period. Students may return books before school, during lunch, between classes, or after school. Please encourage students to renew or return library books to avoid overdue books and to avoid backpack damage to books by placing them carefully in book pockets.

Book Fair

The Book Fair arrives in November! Please take time to stop by the fair during parent-teacher conferences. This fundraiser helps us purchase new items for your students. If you'd like to volunteer, we'd love to have you! Please contact us at the library or through the PTSA if you are interested in helping.

Happy Reading!

Liana Bigham, TMS Librarian

Nurse's Corner

Autumn is here and with it comes those runny noses and coughs. Here are 5 tips for staying health during this beautiful Autumn season:

1. Wash your hands.  Regular hand washing can prevent the spread of illness.  When washing hands, we should use warm water, lather with soap, scrub for at least 20 seconds, and either air dry or use a paper towel.  Students should always wash their hands after using the bathroom and before eating.  Try to keep your hands away from your face, mouth, and nose; places where germs can enter your body. If you're coughing or sneezing - ALWAYS do so into your elbow!

2. Start off with a strong, healthy breakfast in the morning.

3. Stay home and rest if you are not feeling well.  You should keep your student home for least 24 hours if they have a fever of 100 degrees F or higher, and they should not come back to school until they are fever free for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing agents.  Students having vomiting or diarrhea should also remain home until symptom free for 24 hours.

4. Drink plenty of water.

5. Stay current on vaccinations.  Reminder: all sixth grade students are required to have a Tdap booster.  Please provide the date to the school nurse so we can update student vaccination files.  If you have not yet received required vaccinations, please schedule an appointment with your health care provider.

I hope you all have a wonderful Autumn!

Nurse Rachel
