Letter from the Principal
Dear Thunderbird Families,
The warmer weather and longer days mean we've hit
the final two months of the school year. The time will go by quickly,
and it'll be summer before we know it. We have many events going on so
please note the dates included in this newsletter. There is much to
celebrate and enjoy as we strive to maximize the time we have with our
Here are a few reminders that will help us all to
have a smooth end of the school year:
- Dress Code: Please make
sure your student comes to school in clothes that follow our dress
code. We will call parents and guardians when needed to ensure
each student is dressed in a way that keeps the focus on learning.
- Electronic Devices: We have
noticed an increasing number of students losing cell phones and
other electronic devices at school. Students are responsible for
items they bring to school. We are not responsible for tracking
down lost or stolen devices.
- Class Concerns: If you have
any questions or concerns about how your student in doing in a
class, your first point of contact should be your student's
teacher. They have the most knowledge about how your student in
doing in their class and want to work with families to address
- Testing: Please make sure
your student is at school and well-rested so they can to do their
best on the upcoming state tests. Science testing for
8th graders is the week of May 13th - 18th. All students will take
the SBA Math exam on May 21st and 22nd. All students will take the
SBA Language Arts exams on May 29th and 30th.
Staff Appreciation Week is May 6th - 10th. Our incredible staff invests
so much into our students day in and day out. They love our kids and
our community. I would encourage you to say "thank you" in
some way to staff members who have made a positive difference for your
student. Our staff certainly deserves to hear how much our community
you for your support and encouragement of what we do with your student
at Tolt. We are grateful to work with such great families.
Assessments Are Here
This month, Tolt students will participate in the
annual required state testing assessments.
Our main priority regarding the rules of testing is
that once a student begins testing on a certain day, that student must
finish testing that same day. It is important that students attend
school on time on testing days. Please plan to schedule any medical,
dental, etc., appointments for your child outside of the testing
window, or if unavoidable, in the afternoon on testing days. We
appreciate your help with this!
these important dates on your calendar:
Comprehensive Assessment of Science (WCAS) -
testing begins Monday, May 13th, with 8th graders testing in their
Science classes following Tolt's regular bell schedule. The WCAS is an
untimed online assessment and takes students approximately 110 minutes
to complete. WCAS may be administered in one, two, or three sessions.
Smarter Balanced Assessment (SBA) - 6th, 7th, and
Tuesday, May 21st, and Wednesday, May 22nd, students will take the two
math portions of SBA. The following week, students will test on
Wednesday, May 29th, and Thursday, May 30th, completing the two
English/Language Arts portions. Each test will be provided a 150-minute
window. All SBA testing is done on the computer.
can you best prepare your child for these assessments?
- Have your student at
school, all day, every day unless they are ill. If possible,
please plan or rearrange medical/dental appointments for the
afternoons on testing days.
- Students should come to
school well-rested and with a nutritious breakfast in their
bellies, so their brains are in full-drive mode!
- Students must arrive
at school with laptops fully charged, a pair (or two!) of earbuds
that attach directly to their laptop (wireless earbuds are not
compatible with the student laptops) and a
silent reading book.

Only a few short weeks until summer
our new incoming 6th graders! Additional
vaccinations for middle school students. All incoming
6th graders, aged 11-12 years,
need to receive the Tdap booster for
6th grade entry. If your student is not old enough to
receive this vaccine during the summer, please schedule an
appointment with their healthcare provider to receive the Tdap as
soon as they are old enough. This is a required vaccine
is just around the corner! Summer is the
perfect time to make an appointment with your healthcare provider.
We will be sending out letters this summer asking for health
updates for students with Individual Health Plans and Emergency
Care Plans. This is a great time to make sure your student's
immunizations are up-to-date, obtain any necessary signatures for
health forms, and complete sports physicals. If you have any
questions regarding your student's health plan or immunization
status, please contact me.
mentors! Our Youth Success Mentoring program starts next
school year. If you're interested in becoming a mentor, please
talk with Nurse Rachel. We'd love to have you join the program!
- National School Nurses Day! May 8th is National school
nurses day; May 6-12 is National nurses week. Nurses work in
thousands of different fields all over the world. Check out this article talking about 5 ways a
school nurse benefits the school. If you or someone you know is a
nurse - thank you for all you do!!
- Head outside this spring! Healthy physical activity
habits in adolescents can promote lifelong health and wellbeing
and also prevent various health conditions. It is recommended that
children ages 6-17 engage in at least 60 minutes or more of
physical activity every day.
you for helping us keep everyone at school healthy!
Save the Date for the Tolt 8th Grade Dance
Friday, June 7, 2018 at 7 pm
all 6th and 7th Grade parents!
We need 6th and 7thGrade parents to
help chaperone this fantastic, fun event. It is tradition each year to
NOT have 8th grade parents chaperone to allow the kids to feel a bit
more independence during their celebration. Being a chaperone is a fun
and easy way to volunteer your time and pay it forward for your kiddos
when it is their turn to attend!
Chaperones will be needed from
6:40-9:30pm on June 7th at the Riverview District Building. You will
NOT be asked to clean up after the event...just roam around during the
dance and make sure everyone is being appropriate and that no students
leave the building or main dance area. There will be some RSD teachers
chaperoning as well. I will hold a very brief meeting on a separate
date prior to the event to go over specifics.
Please contact me if you are
interested in helping chaperone the dance or if you have any questions.
